ASMS Celebrates its 50th Anniversary
In 2002 the American Society for Mass Spectrometry will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the annual meetings on "mass spectrometry and allied topics".
The society emerged from the American Society for Testing and Materials meetings of 1952. These meetings would last through 1952-1953, at which time they were reorganized as meetings of a new committee-American Society for Testing Materials Committee E-14 on Mass Spectrometry (ASTM E14). The first meeting of ASTM E14 was held in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy in 1953. The first dedicated ASMS conference was held in 1970.
ASMS membership now exceeds 3500 scientists throughout the world and many consider the annual ASMS conference the premier mass spectrometry meeting in the world. ASMS launched its own journal, the Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry, in 1990 that is offered free to members.
The 2002 ASMS annual conference will return to Orlando, Florida at the site of the 1998 meeting.
